Hello and welcome to the content universe, I’m Mikkel Svold and this is going to be a talk, I would say a rather loose talk, but a very important talk when it comes to making the most of your content producing process and removing some of the obstacles in the I know that I’ve previously also had an episode, I think it’s called Removing Rocks from your Content Production Workflow, and this is going to be an episode talking about the same kind of thing and the same idea, because I do really believe that one of the biggest struggles of content production people have is that their processes are too heavy and the processes are too manually carried out, there’s too many small things that needs to be done in order for one piece of content to get out the door. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Mikkel Svold, and this podcast takes the form of whatever basically idea that I’ve got from today, what learning that I think I can take from my work today and then put it in a kind of vlog style podcast form and have my take on it. And my background for giving you these takes is that I run the content agency called Montanus where we do podcasts, we do blog posts, social media posts for knowledge driven companies, so mainly high knowledge companies, engineering companies etc. Alright so what is today really about? Well today I encountered or re-encountered, that’s more correct actually, I re-encountered a process, a work process where I just see many different obstacles. So this particular work process entailed you know when we had a podcast episode ready, there are so many steps in the technical setup of this blog post, I’m saying blog post I’m meaning podcast episode, there are so many technical setups for this episode to go online on this client’s website that I just really think it’s worth considering whether all of these steps are value-adding or they’re just taking time or they could be adjusted in a way that they would more or less serve the same purpose but but not take the resources so in this particular example one thing that is quite time-consuming and also a cause to well, confusion is the fact that it has every episode has a specific unique URL structure whereas the easier way to do this would be to just have episode-13 episode-14 episode-15 so instead of having a very simple structure like that one with the episode and the episode number each episode would have a unique link structure or a unique URL structure that is one example another example could be when you put the stuff online how many people need to go through it and how much of the putting it online how much of that is actually manually carried out I think one thing that I really recommend you guys out there because I’m sure you all have like complicated processes that are not value adding at all because I’m guessing that all companies have I certainly have that as well in my little company but my task for you today would be to set aside, say two hours not in a big group, in a small group and then go through the process of producing a piece of content from A to Z or Z I say A to Z, it’s easier, A to Z if you go through what are the actual steps and maybe actually taking the entire process is too much because then when you have to overlook a really, fairly large process of production you tend to forget all the small details whereas if you say, OK, what is the process of the blog post on a website try that, what is the process of putting a blog post on a website for many of you guys it will be, write the blog post OK, and then once we’ve have the blog post we need a feature image OK, check with that and then putting it online would often entail calling up someone at an agency having access to your website if you can’t do it yourself calling up someone, making them put it online they would probably have to adjust the layout of the text they would probably have to insert more than one image so they would insert an extra image or 2 extra images all the way down I can tell you for myself one of the things that I was doing back in the days was that I would put I would copy paste the text from Word into, I use WordPress so I would copy paste it into WordPress and then because I’ve seen like a fancy way of presenting your related articles I’ve seen that on a newspaper I’m reading and it just looks really cool but what I found out was that when you do that, that requires the entire process to be carried out manually because I would have to copy paste, not the whole blog post but say a quarter of the blog post paste it in, and then I would have to kind of add that little related article block into the piece, and adjusting the line length it was like coming in from this side so I would have to have text from the blog post still on the left side of that little related article block and then again, once I’ve done that I would then have to copy the rest of the blog post into WordPress so having to do that that actually took me around I don’t even know, but it’s probably not that long but it was like ten minutes, 15 minutes doing that and then also having to set up their images and all this All of that was a manual process and that meant that just because I wanted to have that fancy-looking related article block that actually became something that hindered completely hindered me putting out posts at all because I was then having to look at how do I do this I had to set aside time to do a fairly tedious and also fairly trivial task that is not value-adding at all it just looked a little bit better but looking back at that little process to me is just, that was just a stupid little thing and it’s completely unnecessary and I really want you to sit down with your team a couple of people and sit down and go through what are some of the small tasks that you have to do for you to push out content what does it take how much extra little time do you actually spend when you put out content on things that are not that important but they kind of seem… they seemed important when you when you first try them out and had a little niceness factor or something but in reality, it’s not producing it’s not adding any value at all this is a very fluffy episode because this is a very fluffy kind of exercise because you can do that with all of your different content types sit down… look at the process but it of course… it comes from this kind of… I’m not a lean management express but it comes from this kind of idea of eliminating all of the stuff that is not value adding eliminate all of the stuff that is not really necessary for you to put out the value adding content or the valuable content that you are creating out there so that is todays episode that is really what I want you to think about eliminate superfluous, small, insignificant, tasks all right that is one job for you and don’t sit down today todays great idea is not always the greatest idea it is not always the most important but put it on your list of things that you should do for strategy weekend sometime and then, yeah, I really hope to see you in another episode and by the way, of course if you want to support this episode or if you want to support this podcast I really really just appreciate you hitting that like button, hitting that bell button the follow button because that just really helps this podcast to kind of pop up for people who are likeminded who are like you, who want to expand their content production knowledge so to say and, yeah, of course, if you want please do share it with your friends and colleagues if they would find it interesting as well and then of course, lastly if you have any suggestions something that you want my opinion on something that you think is really bad something you think is really good reach out to me, you can do that or you can
