Hey, here’s something interesting I chatted about with my friend, Anne Frost. We were talking about how real stuff feels on social media, especially with all the AI-generated content out there. And it made me wonder: is the AI-driven social media phase wrapping up before it even got big?
Just think about it.
On LinkedIn, a ton of people are really good at getting AI models like ChatGPT to crank out the so-called “high performing posts” with perfect writing and perfect structure. But honestly, most of what we’re seeing these days just looks like the same-old, same-old boring stuff – and it’s simply too easy to spot the post template behind.
The Social Media Post Formula
Let’s be real: writing on LinkedIn has turned pretty generic. You know how it goes:
- Start with a catchy opening to get folks’ attention
- Structure your main points so they’re easy to read
- Finish with a solid call-to-action (though that’s kind of fading)
- Used to have hashtags all over, but that’s not a big deal now
This recipe is so obvious that anyone creating content on LinkedIn gets it right. And here’s what that means: it’s super easy to feed that recipe into AI and get a decent post out. Shift the tone a bit, throw in some personality, and voilà, an AI-crafted post is ready to go.
The Soulless AI-Bot Feed
Nowadays, scrolling through my feed feels off. Posts might tick all the boxes, but they seem fake and robotic, like they’re churned out by emotionless AI.
I’m all for making content efficiently, but this cut-and-paste style is wearing us out. Whether content is written by a person or AI, following this tired template just strips away the human feel.
That’s the issue, right? Sure, these posts might be algorithm-friendly, but they’re missing the most important part: being real.
Back to Social Media’s Roots
Anne and I think people are starting to go back to how social media began. You remember, when people just posted their thoughts without overthinking it or gaming the system.
We’re digging that genuine, unpolished vibe. Look at what’s popular now: simple videos, long talks in podcasts, anything that feels straight from the heart, not overly produced.
Even in text, folks are leaning towards raw, almost handwritten posts from people who just want to share ideas, not game algorithms.
The (Temporary) End of AI Content
So yeah, it looks like the trend of formulaic AI content might be fading away—for now, at least.
Should we give up on AI? Absolutely not! We can still use it to help brainstorm ideas, pick topics, give some context, and understand stuff better.
But when it comes to creating content, we need to step back from this overdone style and make things more genuine and personal.
Bringing the “Social” Back
Here’s my plan: both for my own stuff and for my clients at Montanus, I’m aiming for more personal, relaxed, and real content. We’re rolling it back (… well maybe not all the way…) to the early days when people simply shared their thoughts without worrying about strategy.
Will it work? Who knows! But maybe—just maybe—we can make social media feel alive again by keeping it real.
